Sean Payton calls it how he sees it.
Denver Broncos defensive end Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended for the entire 2023 season due to a gambling violation, joining a growing list of NFL players facing similar bans. While the details of Uwazurike’s gambling activities were not revealed, previous suspensions of players for a comparable length of time were related to betting on NFL games.
This recent development has drawn criticism from his head coach, who believes the league has done a poor job of clarifying gambling rules for players. In an interview, the coach expressed concern about the increasing number of violations and the negative image it portrays for the NFL.
In an interview with USA TODAY this week, Payton sounded off on the NFL over the lack of clarity players have been given with regard to gambling rules. He said the number of violations reflects poorly on the league.
“When you have a bunch of players getting D’s, you have to start looking at the message,” Payton told Bell. “And we’ve had a lot of D’s in our league this year with this policy.”
This incident marks the tenth suspension related to the NFL’s gambling policy since April.
The coach previously criticized the league’s policy, noting the challenges teams faced in understanding the original information provided. He also called out the league’s hypocrisy in allowing team affiliations with sportsbooks and gambling outlets while players are prohibited from having any involvement.
“I know this: There’s a handful of owners that are owning these ‘problems,’” Payton said. “A player can’t have a share of DraftKings or FanDuel. It’s shameful. Embarrassing.”
The NFL acknowledged communication issues regarding the gambling policy and attempted to address them by providing players with six key rules to follow.
The most important rules are not betting on NFL games and refraining from gambling while on the job. Adhering to these guidelines can help players stay out of trouble.
