You don’t get a mulligan if you miss the birth of your child.
Scottie Scheffler heads into the Masters as the clear favorite, boasting two recent wins and a runner-up finish in his last three outings. However, those banking on Scheffler’s victory at Augusta National should exercise caution, as the Texan may not be teeing off this weekend—by choice.
Scheffler’s wife, Meredith, is expecting their first child by month’s end, alongside Sam and Caroline Burns, whose due date is just over a week away. The impending arrivals have both Scottie and Sam monitoring their homes, with a firm commitment to withdraw from the tournament should their wives go into labor.
Reflecting on the impending arrival, Scheffler expressed excitement for the new addition to their family. “It’s going to be pretty wild,” he shared earlier this year. “It’s been a pretty exciting last seven months or so, and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting the baby out of there nice and healthy and with a healthy momma, and then we’ll go from there.”

While Scheffler secured the green jacket in 2022 and posted a respectable T-10 finish last year, Burns is primed for a strong showing, currently ranking 22nd in strokes gained on tour this season. The duo is believed to be staying together in Augusta this week as they await the arrival of their newborns.
Scheffler and Burns join a line of golfers who’ve competed with expecting wives, reminiscent of Phil Mickelson carrying a beeper at the 1999 U.S. Open, poised to withdraw should his wife go into labor. Mickelson ultimately finished second, with his wife giving birth the following day.
