Triple-A Buffalo Bisons catcher Payton Henry is “alert and appropriately responsive” following a concerning incident during Friday night’s game against the Syracuse Mets.
Henry had to leave the game after being struck on the head with a backswing.
In the seventh inning, Mets infielder Pablo Reyes swung and missed at a pitch from Bisons right-hander Connor Cooke.

Unfortunately, Reyes’ backswing collided with Henry’s helmet, just behind his left ear.
This caused Henry’s mask to come off, and he fell forward before lying on his back, clearly in pain.
Buffalo’s athletic trainer and manager Casey Candaele quickly rushed to Henry’s aid, with the trainer tending to his head.
Concerned, Candaele called for emergency services from the Syracuse dugout.
Players from both teams watched in silence and worry, some covering their faces with their hats.
A backboard was promptly brought onto the field, and Henry was taken off on a cart to be evaluated at a local hospital.
The Bisons later tweeted that Henry was “alert and appropriately responsive.”
After discussions between Candaele, Syracuse manager Dick Scott, and the umpires, it was decided to end the game in the seventh inning.
A sixth-round pick of the Brewers in the 2016 Draft from Pleasant Grove High School in Utah, the 26-year-old Henry has played in 20 Major League games with the Marlins in 2021-22.
This season marks his first with the Blue Jays’ organization.
