The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly expanding their search for top-tier point guard talent this NBA offseason, with a focus on building a team around Victor Wembanyama.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” NBA insider Shams Charania from The Athletic and Stadium shared insights into the Spurs’ strategy. “Expect them to be linked with nearly every premier point guard hitting the market this offseason,” Charania said.
The Spurs previously showed interest in Atlanta Hawks’ Dejounte Murray before the trade deadline, signaling their commitment to strengthening the point guard position. Despite the Hawks not trading and missing the playoffs, ongoing changes could make a player like Trae Young available. According to NBA Analysis Network, there are concerns within the Spurs’ organization about the attractiveness of playing alongside Young.

Charania also discussed the uncertainties surrounding Young’s future with the Hawks, indicating that the Spurs are prepared to make a major move if the right opportunity presents itself. “The level of interest the Spurs are showing in top-tier guards indicates they’re serious about upgrading their team,” he noted.
Integrating a seasoned point guard could complement Wembanyama, the rookie sensation who has already shown signs of being a transformative player in the league. With Wembanyama’s ambitions to compete at a high level right away, acquiring a player of Young’s caliber could significantly speed up the Spurs’ shift from a rebuilding phase to a contending status.
“Wembanyama has made it evident that he’s ready to win now,” Charania remarked. “The Spurs’ aggressive pursuit of a top point guard could be the key to unlocking his and the team’s potential.”
