As time passes, it may become difficult to recall the once sky-high hopes of Denver Broncos fans as they eagerly anticipated the arrival of the Russell Wilson era.
Back in March of 2022, the Broncos made a significant trade with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire Wilson. At the time, the cost of the trade seemed irrelevant. After all, the Broncos were acquiring a nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback, seemingly putting an end to their long-standing struggles at the position. However, reality did not align with these lofty expectations.
The trade for Wilson, coupled with his subsequent contract extension, will be viewed as one of the most ill-fated moves in NFL history. After just two seasons, the Broncos made the decision to part ways with Wilson, announcing his release on Monday through a joint statement from general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton.
“Informing Russell Wilson of his release was a decision we made as we entered the new league year,” the statement reads. “We express our gratitude to Russell for his contributions and commitment to our team, while wishing him success in his future endeavors.”
Wilson also released a statement expressing his gratitude to “Broncos Country.”
The era of Wilson in Denver will be remembered for his underwhelming performance on the field, the mishandling of his final season by the Broncos, the heavily one-sided nature of the trade, and the significant financial investment made by the Broncos, all of which ultimately left them right back where they started: searching for a solution to their quarterback woes.
