An NFL executive has raised the possibility that the Pittsburgh Steelers might part ways with Russell Wilson before the upcoming season if Justin Fields outperforms him during training camp.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared this insight on NFL Live, highlighting the absence of a binding commitment or loyalty to either player from the Steelers’ perspective. Schefter emphasized the relatively modest investments made in acquiring both quarterbacks.
“There’s no commitment, obligation, loyalty to any of these guys,” Schefter said. “They didn’t pay much for either one of them. I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him, Russell Wilson, during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season.”
Wilson joined Pittsburgh on a one-year, $1.2 million deal following his release from the Broncos, with Denver still owing him nearly $40 million in guaranteed money. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears traded Fields to the Steelers for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2025, with one year remaining on his rookie contract.

Schefter and ESPN’s Brooke Pryor previously indicated that Wilson is slated to start as QB1 ahead of Fields. However, Schefter also pointed out on NFL Live that the Steelers have the flexibility to assess the situation during camp and make decisions that serve the team’s best interests.
In principle, the executive’s remarks hold merit. Pittsburgh’s lack of commitment beyond the current season means they can prioritize the most promising player for immediate success while keeping their options open for a long-term quarterback solution.
Given Wilson’s extensive experience and accolades as a nine-time Pro Bowler, it’s logical for him to receive the initial nod as QB1. Nevertheless, whether he maintains that position throughout the season remains to be seen.
