Is Paul George on the way out of Los Angeles?
The NBA draft is looming and rumors suggest that the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to shake things up.
NBA reporter Marc Stein has revealed that there are reports of the Clippers gauging Paul George’s trade value and potentially breaking up the Kawhi Leonard/George duo.
Los Angeles is “attempting to gauge Paul George’s trade value and, to hear some describe it, giving real consideration to the idea of disassembling the Kawhi Leonard/George tandem.”
The Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets have been mentioned as possible destinations for George should the Clippers make such a move.
The Clippers have not met expectations since pairing Leonard with George and both players have had injury concerns.
Another factor to consider is that both players are soon eligible for lucrative contract extensions.
“Complicating matters further: Both Leonard and George are soon eligible for four-year contract extensions worth in excess of $200 million,” Stein wrote. “Both players can become free agents next summer if they decline their respective player options for the 2024-25 season.”
The Clippers must decide whether to pay two injury-prone players or potentially reset the franchise with a draft pick.
For the Trail Blazers, a trade for George would signal their willingness to enter win-now mode with Damian Lillard approaching the back end of his prime.
Conversely, the Rockets have young building blocks in place and George could potentially serve as a veteran leader for the team.
