Rudy Gobert’s provocative money gesture directed at an official during a recent NBA game is likely to incur the league’s disciplinary action.
The Minnesota Timberwolves’ center, reflecting on the incident, expressed his belief that his response was justified, despite the potential consequences.
The incident occurred in the closing moments of regulation during the Timberwolves’ overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Gobert received a technical foul for repeatedly rubbing his fingers together, insinuating that referee Scott Foster may have been influenced by financial motives.
After fouling out of the game and remaining on the court, Gobert made the gesture toward Foster as he approached the scorer’s table. Although Foster didn’t see the gesture, fellow official Natalie Sago did and subsequently issued the technical foul to Gobert.

In the aftermath of the game, Gobert, known for his outspoken nature, did not shy away from acknowledging his actions. He even suggested that the influence of gambling could be impacting game outcomes, stating, “I’ll bite the bullet again. I’ll be the bad guy. I’ll take the fine, but I think it’s hurting our game.
“I know the betting and all that is becoming bigger and bigger, but it shouldn’t feel that way,” Gobert said.
Gobert’s conduct and remarks are expected to undergo league review, possibly resulting in fines or suspension.
The technical foul assessed to Gobert allowed the Cavaliers to tie the game, drawing criticism from Minnesota assistant coach Micah Nori, who emphasized the need for players to exhibit better judgment in such situations.
Acknowledging his role in the incident, Gobert admitted that while his reaction may have been truthful, it was ill-timed and immature, ultimately costing his team the game.
Reflecting on the officiating throughout the game, Gobert expressed frustration, emphasizing that repeated mistakes by officials can be exasperating for players.
