When free agency kicked off, the New England Patriots vigorously pursued Calvin Ridley, aiming to bolster their roster with the star wide receiver. However, Ridley ultimately chose to join the Tennessee Titans, a decision that Patriots owner Robert Kraft attributes to a factor beyond their control.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Kraft clarified that the Patriots were not outbid for Ridley’s services. While speculation arose regarding the impact of Massachusetts’ state income tax (absent in Tennessee) on Ridley’s choice, Kraft affirmed that New England was prepared to offset any financial disparity with their contract offer.
However, Kraft disclosed that Ridley’s girlfriend’s preference to reside in the southern region played a pivotal role in his decision-making process.
“It was made clear his girlfriend wanted to be in the south. … He didn’t want to be in the northeast,” Kraft said.

Kraft also acknowledged that the uncertain quarterback situation in New England might have been a deterrent for Ridley. Nevertheless, he noted that the Titans themselves face uncertainty with Will Levis assuming the starting quarterback role for the first time.
The Patriots endured a challenging season last year, reflected in one of the league’s weakest rosters, potentially influencing their lack of significant free agency signings. It’s conceivable that Ridley harbored minimal interest in joining the Patriots and was primarily leveraging offers. Ultimately, his choice appeared to narrow down to the Titans and another undisclosed team.
