Former NFL star Robert Griffin III expressed criticism toward Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton for his handling of Russell Wilson’s benching for the final two games of the season.
Payton announced the decision on Wednesday following the Broncos’ recent loss to the New England Patriots, with Jarrett Stidham set to start the remaining games. The decision is reportedly linked to the team’s desire to maintain financial flexibility for the offseason, given Wilson’s $37 million salary in 2025 that becomes fully vested in March.

Griffin took to X to voice his disapproval of Payton’s treatment of Wilson, stating, “Sean Payton has been doing Russell Wilson dirty since the moment he became the Head Coach of the Denver Broncos. Hasn’t once shown him the respect he has earned as a Super Bowl Winning QB or with the respect you show to a QB your organization traded the farm for.”
In response, Payton acknowledged the financial considerations but emphasized the team’s commitment to winning and reaching the playoffs. He stated, “I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that, and I can tell you we’re desperately trying to win.”
Payton clarified that the decision wasn’t solely an indictment on Wilson, noting the challenges with the offensive line and receiving corps. He added, “I can’t replace the entire offensive line, I can’t bring in five new receivers, and if it continues over a period of time, then there’ll be another guy here talking to you, as well.”
Wilson responded to the benching with a positive outlook, writing, “God’s got me. Looking forward to what’s next.”
The situation suggests that Sean Payton aims to have greater control over the quarterback position, signaling a preference to choose his own quarterback rather than sticking with the one inherited.
