The debate between Gronk and Kelce as the greatest tight end is a topic worth delving into.
NFL legend Rob Gronkowski recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussion about who holds the title of the greatest tight end of all time, particularly in comparison to the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce.
During a recent appearance on the Ryen Russillo Podcast, Gronk was asked directly by Ryan, “Are you better than Kelce?”
Gronk responded, “I would say in a different aspect. I mean, I believe that Travis Kelce is the best receiving tight end. When it comes to catching the ball, there’s no doubt about it; you can’t even argue. He’s had seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, excels in the red zone, and when he’s not on the field, the team’s dynamics change.”
While Gronk readily praised Kelce’s receiving abilities, he also acknowledged that the “Greatest of All Time” title hinges on various factors. He recognized that a player’s legacy can be influenced by their playing style, the offensive systems they’re part of, and the teammates they play alongside. Given his reputation for elite blocking and a physical playing style, Gronkowski stated that it’s a debate he doesn’t wish to have the final word on.

Currently, Kelce, who is still in his thirties, holds the top spot on the career receiving list for tight ends in yards per game and ranks sixth in touchdowns with 72. His seven consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons set an NFL record, and he seems poised to extend that streak this season.
On the other hand, Gronkowski has made a mark in the NFL with 107 total touchdowns, including playoff games, and has delivered numerous standout performances in significant primetime contests, making him a strong contender in the GOAT debate.
While it’s unlikely that the debate over the greatest tight end in history will be settled anytime soon, it’s reassuring to hear an honest response from Gronk on the matter. With the tight end position assuming greater importance than ever in the NFL, it’s entirely possible that we will witness a player who surpasses the greats of the past in the future.
