Sage Steele departed from ESPN earlier this year amid controversy sparked by her comments about the network and its policies. While she has yet to secure a new position, recent reports suggest she may be considering a role far removed from her career in journalism.
According to Daily Ructions, undisclosed Republicans in Washington and Connecticut are eyeing Steele as a potential candidate for Connecticut’s fifth congressional district in 2024.
The New York Post has corroborated this information, revealing that Steele has engaged in initial discussions about running for a seat in the House of Representatives.
If selected as the Republican nominee, Steele would be challenging incumbent Democrat Jahana Hayes, who secured her third term in 2022 with a margin of fewer than 2,000 votes.
Steele, who spent over 15 years at ESPN, where she served as an anchor on SportsCenter and hosted various shows, is now exploring her next career moves. Her departure from the network was prompted by a lawsuit she filed against her former employer, alleging that her freedom of speech rights were infringed when she was sidelined from television following her remarks on Jay Cutler’s podcast.

On Cutler’s show in 2021, Steele had voiced her concerns about the COVID vaccine mandate, stating, “I work for a company that mandates it, and I had until September 30th to get it done or I’m out. I respect everyone’s decision, I really do, but to mandate it is sick and it’s scary to me in many ways.”
The legal case concluded with a settlement, prompting Steele’s decision to leave ESPN so that she could exercise her First Amendment rights more freely.
