There’s considerable tension surrounding Ben Johnson, the Washington Commanders, and the recent interview between the two parties.
Remaining in Detroit as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, Johnson reportedly soured on the Commanders’ ownership, viewing them as “basketball guys” overly confident in their football opinions, as per ESPN.
According to the same report, Johnson’s performance in the interview left much to be desired.
The Commanders’ ownership group, led by managing partner Josh Harris, features NBA Hall of Fame point guard Magic Johnson. Magic, renowned for winning five NBA titles with the Lakers and securing titles in MLB, WNBA, and MLS as an owner, is a prominent figure within the organization.
Washington continues its search to fill the vacant offensive coordinator position, having already addressed their head coaching vacancy by hiring former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator and Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn.

Meanwhile, Johnson returns to Detroit, where he achieved considerable success in the past season. The Lions ranked among the NFL’s top teams in various offensive categories and managed to score 24 points against the 49ers in the first half of the NFC championship game. Unfortunately, they fell short in the second half, ultimately losing with a final score of 34-31.
While Johnson did not secure a head coaching position this year, he remains a strong candidate for such roles in the upcoming offseason. However, the prospect of him joining Washington in the future appears unlikely at this time.
