Trey Lance’s stock continues to fall.
The direction of the 49ers’ QB situation may become clearer this week.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has to navigate Brock Purdy’s return from an elbow injury while also deciding how to distribute reps between Trey Lance and Sam Darnold in a backup quarterback battle.

In Wednesday’s practice, Purdy was absent, and Lance and Darnold split first and second-team reps. On Thursday, Purdy took all of the first-team reps, while Lance got the first snaps with the second team, sharing those reps with Darnold.
According to a report from Pro Football Talk, Sam Darnold is expected to be the QB2, with Lance falling to the third spot. Chris Sims agrees with this assessment. Purdy seems to be the frontrunner after his impressive performance last year.

Lance was supposed to be the chosen one last year, but an early-season injury cost him his starting job.
In the 2022 season, Lance started as the 49ers’ quarterback, playing in two games before sustaining an ankle injury that ended his season. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 194 yards and one interception, also rushing for 67 yards.
