Former NFL star Reggie Bush and his family are safe after a frightening attempted home invasion by three men at their residence in Encino, California. The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 10, and was reported to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), as detailed by the Los Angeles Times.
According to the LAPD, the break-in attempt was thwarted when a resident of the home heard the sound of a window breaking. Upon investigating, they found broken glass outside the house. Thankfully, the suspects did not manage to steal anything, and no one was harmed. The three men involved, described as wearing black clothing, were seen fleeing the scene before authorities could apprehend them.
Following the ordeal, Bush reassured everyone of his family’s safety. In a text message to the LA Times, he confirmed, “Everyone is safe.” While the incident was undoubtedly unsettling, it appears that quick action by the residents and a stroke of luck prevented the situation from escalating further.
This attempted break-in marks a troubling moment for Bush, but it follows a much more uplifting event in his life earlier this year: the return of his Heisman Trophy. After a long battle to reclaim the prestigious award, Bush finally had it reinstated in 2024. The Heisman Trust returned the trophy to Bush after considering the “enormous changes” that have taken place in college athletics, particularly with the NCAA’s introduction of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy, which allows student-athletes to profit from brand partnerships and endorsements.

In 2005, Bush was at the pinnacle of college football after winning the Heisman Trophy while playing as a standout running back for the University of Southern California (USC). However, his triumph was short-lived. In 2010, the NCAA ruled Bush ineligible after an investigation revealed that he had received improper benefits during his time at USC, including money and gifts that violated the organization’s rules. As a result, Bush was forced to return his Heisman Trophy, becoming the first player in history to voluntarily forfeit the award.
The decision to reinstate Bush’s Heisman came after years of pressure from fans and supporters who believed the punishment was unfair, especially given the evolving landscape of college athletics. With the NIL policy now allowing college athletes to earn money legally, the Heisman Trust ultimately decided that it was time to return the trophy to Bush.
“We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the Trophy to Reggie,” Heisman Trust President Michael Comerford said in a statement issued in April 2024.
Following the announcement, Bush expressed his gratitude on social media, posting a photo of himself with the Heisman Trophy and the caption, “No one can take from you what God has for you.” The moment was a long-awaited victory for the former NFL star, who had fought for over a decade to clear his name and reclaim his legacy.
Despite the unsettling break-in attempt, Reggie Bush remains a symbol of resilience—whether it’s overcoming obstacles in his football career or protecting his family in moments of danger.
For now, Bush and his family can take comfort in knowing they are safe, and he can continue enjoying his hard-earned reunion with one of the most prestigious honors in sports.
