Over a month has passed since the Los Angeles Lakers parted ways with head coach Darvin Ham, and the search for his successor has hit another roadblock.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley, a prime candidate for the job, has chosen to stay at Storrs with hopes of leading his team to a third consecutive NCAA championship.
This decision came as a surprise to many, especially given the lucrative six-year, $70 million offer from one of the most storied franchises in sports history.
Lakers fans were understandably disappointed, but NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski provided some insights into Hurley’s decision on the app formerly known as Twitter.
Wojnarowski, a leading authority in NBA journalism who has also penned a book about Hurley’s father, Bob Hurley, was well-positioned to report on the developments. He revealed that the prospect of making history at UConn was too significant for Hurley to abandon. “As swept away as Hurley became by the Lakers’ courtship and vision for him, he ultimately couldn’t walk away from a chance to make history and pursue a third straight NCAA title,” Wojnarowski explained. He added that Hurley had already received an offer from UConn that would make him one of the highest-paid NCAA coaches, with negotiations set to continue.

With Hurley out of the running, attention among Lakers fans and pundits has shifted to other potential candidates, including former player and LeBron James’ podcast co-host JJ Redick, and former Villanova coach Jay Wright.
