The issues leading to their split were not new, and Belichick, being deeply focused on football, preferred to keep the matter low-key.
Belichick, 71, and Holliday, 60, had been dating since 2007, but according to the source, the couple has “been pretty separate for a while.”
The insider adds that the problem in the couple’s relationship ultimately leading to their split is “not new.”
“Bill is all about football and very busy now. He doesn’t want a lot of public attention on this,” the source tells PEOPLE.
With the NFL season underway, Belichick has a busy schedule and a strong support system in his family. He meets people regularly due to his profession, which may have contributed to the couple’s separation.
Holliday’s role as the President of the Bill Belichick Foundation added complexity to their breakup, as they needed to address issues arising from their long relationship and her involvement in his professional life.
Holliday plans to remain in Jupiter, Florida, where the couple had purchased a house together. Belichick has reportedly decided to let her have the house.
Bill Belichick shares children Amanda, Steve, and Brian with his ex-wife, Debby Clarke Belichick. He has a storied coaching career, winning six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots and two more as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants.
