Thaddeus Moss, son of NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss, has publicly denounced false reports that his father has been diagnosed with liver cancer. The rumors began circulating after tweets from Larry Fitzgerald Sr., father of former NFL star Larry Fitzgerald, and former quarterback Brett Favre, sparked concern on social media.
The Rumors Begin
On Tuesday, Fitzgerald Sr. posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had “heard” Randy Moss had been diagnosed with liver cancer. The veteran reporter’s tweet, which included a call for prayers, quickly gained traction:
“66th NFF Hall of Fame Ceremony here in Las Vegas just heard that Vikings HOF Randy Moss has liver cancer. Let’s show the power of prayer and pull Moss through this. ???. I love you Randy.”
Brett Favre, who briefly played with Moss during their time with the Minnesota Vikings, also reacted with a tweet offering prayers and calling Moss one of the greatest wide receivers of all time.
Thaddeus Responds
Thaddeus Moss, 26, didn’t waste time shutting down the rumors. Directly addressing Fitzgerald Sr. on X, he expressed his outrage:
“This is disgusting. You have no right to try to make private matters public for the sake of engagement. I do not believe my father talks to you, so check your f–king sources.”
He also responded to Brett Favre with a more measured tone, correcting the misinformation:
“Brett, the support is appreciated, truly. This is not true. My father will address the world when he is ready to.”
Favre later revised his post to remove the cancer claim, simply offering prayers to Moss and his family.
The Facts Behind Randy Moss’ Health
Randy Moss, 47, revealed on December 1 during ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown that he was dealing with a personal health issue. While he didn’t disclose specific details, he mentioned undergoing treatment and encouraged viewers to prioritize regular check-ups.
“I just wanted to let the viewers know that me and my wife, me and my family, we are battling something internally,” Moss shared. “I have some great doctors around me. I couldn’t miss the show. I wanted to be here with you guys. I feel great.
“But if y’all see me with these Michigan turnover glasses that I have on, it’s not being disrespectful because I’m on television, man. I’m battling something. I need all the prayer warriors.”
Following his statement, ESPN announced that Moss would be stepping away from his duties to focus on his health.
Fitzgerald Sr. Faces Backlash
Fitzgerald Sr.’s tweet drew criticism, including from his son, Larry Fitzgerald Jr., who allegedly urged him to respect Moss’ privacy. In a now-deleted reply, Larry Jr. reportedly wrote:
“Dad, I think it’s best to respect his privacy on this. If he feels ready to share more about his health, he will. In the meantime, let’s focus on sending him positive energy, prayers, and support rather than speculating.”
Despite the backlash, Fitzgerald Sr. has not publicly apologized for his tweet.
Thaddeus’ Role in Defending His Father
Thaddeus Moss has consistently stood by his father, serving as a vocal advocate for privacy during this time. The former LSU standout, who retired from professional football earlier this year, has focused on ensuring that any updates about Randy Moss’ health come directly from him.

Randy Moss’ Legacy
Widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, Randy Moss revolutionized the position with his speed, athleticism, and ability to make jaw-dropping plays. Over a 14-season career, he scored 156 receiving touchdowns, ranking second all-time. His dynamic presence on the field earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
As Moss takes time to address his health privately, fans and former teammates continue to offer support. However, as Thaddeus reminded everyone, any updates should come from the family and not be fueled by speculation.
For now, the focus remains on sending positive thoughts to Randy Moss as he navigates this personal health journey.
