NFL legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss has opened up about a serious personal health challenge, revealing that he is battling bile duct cancer. The former wide receiver shared his story with fans during an emotional Instagram Live session on Friday, where he disclosed details about his diagnosis, recent surgeries, and upcoming treatment.
A Courageous Announcement
Holding a cane in his right hand, the 47-year-old Moss addressed his followers with the heartfelt update.
“I told y’all over the last couple of weeks about me battling something internally. Your boy is a cancer survivor,” Moss said. He went on to explain that he had recently undergone surgery and spent six days in the hospital, from which he had just been discharged. “I just got out today,” he added, thanking his medical team, which he described as “the best Charlotte has to offer.”
Moss had previously announced on December 1 that he would be taking a leave of absence from his role as an ESPN analyst to address a health issue. However, this was the first time he publicly disclosed the specifics of his condition.
The Fight Against Bile Duct Cancer
Moss revealed that he had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer and had undergone a complex surgical procedure called the Whipple procedure six days earlier. The Whipple procedure, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, is a major surgery often used to treat cancers of the bile duct, pancreas, and small intestine.
In addition to the Whipple procedure, Moss had a separate surgery on Thanksgiving to insert a stent in his liver, a common treatment to address bile duct obstructions. Despite the physical toll, Moss remained optimistic and determined, announcing that he would begin chemotherapy and radiation as part of his ongoing treatment.
