Ivy Van Dusen, a stay-at-home mom and popular homemaking influencer, recently defended Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker against criticism following his controversial commencement address at Benedictine College.
During his speech, Butker, who is Catholic, addressed the women in the audience, suggesting that many might find greater fulfillment in marriage and motherhood than in careers. “I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you,” Butker said. He speculated that while some women might pursue successful careers, “the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
Butker’s comments sparked a backlash, prompting discussions about the roles of women in modern society. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Van Dusen shared her perspective, suggesting that the negative reactions are partly due to societal conditioning. “A lot of people have just been trained to think it’s so important for women to have degrees, to have jobs, to compete with men,” she explained. According to Van Dusen, this has led to a subconscious bias against the traditional role of homemakers, particularly when discussed by men.

Van Dusen also addressed the common misconception about stay-at-home mothers: “I genuinely think that they think we’re just dumb, that we don’t understand it’s oppressive to be at home and to depend on a man financially and that we should be doing so much more.” She countered this by highlighting that many stay-at-home moms are well-educated and have chosen their lifestyle consciously, valuing its benefits for themselves and their families.
Despite the controversy, the NFL has stated that it will not discipline Butker for his comments. Meanwhile, the White House has confirmed that it still plans to host Butker and the Chiefs to celebrate their victory at Super Bowl 58.
