Scottie Scheffler had a busy Friday morning.
The world’s No. 1 golfer was arrested after a misunderstanding with police outside of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. After being detained and released, he’s now back on the course for the second round of the event.
The arresting officer, Bryan Gillis, reportedly did not recognize Scheffler at the time of the arrest but later released a statement explaining his side of the incident. According to Gillis, Scheffler tried to bypass a traffic blockage by pulling into another section of traffic, during which he struck Gillis with his car.
Gillis noted that he was wearing a full LMPD uniform and a high-visibility vest, implying that Scheffler or any other driver should have clearly seen and recognized him. Despite this, Gillis says that Scheffler hit him with the vehicle, causing “pain, swelling, and abrasions” to his knee and wrist.

ESPN’s Michael Eaves reported that Gillis has been with the Louisville Metro Police Department since 2007 and also owns a business called “ACIS Advanced Collision Investigation Services.”
With the arrest now behind him, Scheffler can focus on what he came to Louisville to do: play golf. He is among the top 15 players after Round 1 and is aiming to win the third major title of his career.
We will see how much of an effect Friday’s incident has on him and whether he can stay focused on winning another major in 2024.
