This celebration was reminiscent of the one first performed by Lo’eau LaBonta after scoring a goal in a 2022 soccer game.
Not only did Newman’s 4.85-meter jump earn her a spot on the podium, but it also set a new national record for Canadian women in the pole vault. Her performance was a momentous occasion, and the celebration was a fitting way to cap off her historic achievement.
As for the twerk celebration, it begs the question: who did it better, LaBonta or Newman? Regardless of the answer, Newman’s joyful expression of victory added a unique and entertaining moment to the Olympic Games.
