The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation has been one of the most intriguing storylines heading into the 2024 NFL season.
During the offseason, the Steelers made a significant move by signing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.
Shortly afterward, they traded for young talent Justin Fields. Initially, it was widely believed that Wilson would take the starting role, with Fields serving as his backup. This expectation was confirmed by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin at the start of training camp.
However, there have been growing speculations that Fields might surpass Wilson and secure the starting position before the season even begins.

One particular sign during Steelers training camp suggests that Wilson still holds the starting job firmly.
According to Steelers reporter Noah Strackbein, Pittsburgh has consistently given Wilson the first rep during team drills. This practice, although seemingly minor, feels more intentional considering Wilson is reportedly dealing with an injury that has limited his participation in training camp.
Despite his injury, Wilson would take one rep during team or 7-on-7 drills, then hand the football off to running back Najee Harris. Fields would then take over for the rest of the drill.
This trend has not been a one-time occurrence; it happens every time Wilson is present to take reps. This consistent move appears to be the team’s subtle way of signaling that Wilson remains the top quarterback despite his ongoing injury.
However, if Wilson’s injury persists and Fields continues to impress during practice, the buzz surrounding the quarterback competition at Steelers’ camp may only grow louder.
