The Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Green Bay Packers on the opening weekend of the 2024 NFL season in the NFL’s first-ever game in South America.
However, when the Philadelphia Eagles travel to Brazil to face the Green Bay Packers in September, they may encounter an unexpected challenge as they may be banned from wearing their traditional green home jerseys.
The game is set to take place at Sao Paulo’s Corinthians Arena.
Corinthians has a fierce rivalry with the club Palmeiras, and therefore have an informal ban on the color green which is sported by Palmeiras.
Players and fans are forbidden from wearing green, and even Corinthians strike Jo was once fined for wearing green cleats.
“The Philadelphia #Eagles could be BANNED from wearing home jerseys for their Brazil game, per the Daily Mail. The reason is because team whose stadium it is, Corinthians has the color banned due to their intense rivalry with Palmeiras.”
Since the Eagles are the home team technically in this match-up, it must be alright for the Packers to sport their home greens as the road team.
The rivalry between Corinthians and Palmeiras is quite bitter as Jo offered a heartfelt apology following the fine for wearing green cleats.
“I would never use green boots because of my history with Corinthians, a club I have loved since I was little,’ he said at the time.
‘I would never disrespect Corinthians, much less the fans. I have always honoured this shirt and I always will honor it.”
The game in Brazil, which will be streamed exclusively on Peacock, is one of five regular seasons NFL games taking place abroad next season.
