Jason Day is entering the Tour Championship with a one-under-par score, trailing FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler by nine shots.
However, Day’s focus may be more on the impending birth of his fifth child, as his wife Ellie is due in just 12 days.
In the past, Day has missed tournaments for the births of his children and due to injuries.
Fortunately, this year he is healthy, but the due date still lingers in his mind.
Day hopes that Ellie can hold out for another week or two so he can spend time with his family.
“I’m just hoping that Ellie holds out another week or two weeks and I can be there and spend some time with my family,” Day said.
Although the idea of rushing home if needed was discussed, Ellie assured him that he should stay and play the tournament.
“She said, ‘You’re not likely to make it back in time if I do go into labor,’” Day said, according to Golf Digest. “We’re having a home birth. She said I may as well just play the tournament and try to win.”
While Day faces a nine-shot deficit in Atlanta, his main goal is to play his best golf and possibly make up ground on Scheffler.
Even if he doesn’t succeed, Day finds solace in the excitement of his growing family.
