Penn State head football coach James Franklin had an eventful night as he embarked on a journey to support two of his former players who were being drafted into the NFL, with their draft events taking place roughly an hour apart from each other.
According to Yahoo Sports and detailed on Franklin’s social media accounts, offensive lineman Olu Fashanu and edge rusher Chop Robinson, both from Maryland, were potential first-round picks in the NFL draft on Thursday, April 25. The challenge was heightened by the fact that they lived in cities 57 miles apart.
Franklin’s night began in Gaithersburg, MD, where he joined Fashanu, 21, and his family to celebrate his selection by the New York Jets as the 11th overall pick. Franklin shared a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter): “You are an incredible young man & football player. We couldn’t be happier for you & your family. Your love for the game, dedication & hard work will continue to stand out in your professional career. The @nyjets are extremely lucky to have you! #WeAre.”

Soon after Fashanu’s selection, Franklin rushed north to Waldorf, MD, to be with Robinson, also 21, as he was drafted 21st overall by the Miami Dolphins, about 70 minutes after Fashanu.
Penn State Football’s X account captured Franklin’s timely arrival, posting a video of him hurrying up the steps to Robinson’s family home.
“Congrats Chop, the @MiamiDolphins are lucky to have you! You’ve earned this opportunity,” Franklin posted, praising Robinson. “We appreciate what you’ve given to Penn State. Continue to compete & chase your dreams. #WeAre.”
Yahoo Sports noted that two other Penn State players, tight end Theo Johnson and edge rusher Adisa Isaac, were also up for selection in the second round, residing in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and New York, respectively, making it impossible for Franklin to attend both of their draft parties.
