As tonight’s NFL Draft approaches, clarity is emerging around the top picks, placing the New England Patriots in a pivotal position with the third overall selection.
Patriots insider Tom E. Curran suggests that UNC quarterback Drake Maye is likely to be the Patriots’ choice at No. 3, assuming quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are off the board first.
However, Curran notes that the Patriots could be swayed to trade down if they receive a compelling offer from teams like the Minnesota Vikings or the New York Giants.
“Expect the Patriots to take Drake Maye at number three tonight unless someone—Vikings or Giants—makes them an offer they just can’t refuse,” Curran stated.
This draft comes at a time of significant transition for the Patriots, who have recently parted ways with former first-round pick and Pro Bowl quarterback Mac Jones after three seasons. With a new head coach in Jerod Mayo and changes in the front office, the team appears ready to chart a new course.
Although veteran Jacoby Brissett is currently on the roster, which could suffice for the short term, the team might opt to let him start while focusing on rebuilding other areas.
Selecting Maye would certainly place immediate high expectations on his shoulders, whether he starts or not. Alternatively, should the Patriots decide against drafting him, 2024 could potentially be a year focused on rebuilding the team.
Regardless of the path they choose, it appears the Patriots may be facing some transitional challenges in the near future.
