Safety Patrick McMorris, selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 198th pick in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, accidentally hung up on the team on Saturday, mistaking their call for a spam call.
Before joining the University of California, Berkeley for a standout season, McMorris played four years at San Diego State University. During his tenure with the Aztecs, he accumulated 6.5 tackles for loss, secured five interceptions, and recovered two fumbles over 30 games.
McMorris truly shone in his single season with the Golden Bears in 2023, recording 50 solo tackles, 40 assisted tackles, 90 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 1.0 sack in 13 games. Despite his impressive performance, the Golden Bears finished the season with a disappointing 6-7 record, including a 4-5 record in conference play.

On his new team, the Dolphins, Jevon Holland was arguably the top safety during the 2023 NFL season. Drafted by Miami in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Holland appeared in 12 of the team’s 17 regular-season games, notching 74 combined tackles, 52 solo tackles, 22 assists, and three tackles for loss, along with a recovered fumble. However, he was sidelined for the Dolphins’ playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs on January 13 due to knee injuries.
As McMorris prepares for his first NFL season, he can look to Holland as a model of success and resilience in the safety position.
Holland’s experience and performance level could provide invaluable guidance for McMorris as he transitions from college to professional football.
