Just a week after suffering a high ankle sprain in a victory against the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes returned to action on Saturday and delivered a strong performance in a 27-19 win over the Houston Texans.
Despite concerns about his mobility, Mahomes showcased his usual brilliance, completing 28 of 41 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown. He also added 33 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries, demonstrating his resilience and ability to adapt under challenging circumstances. The win improved the Chiefs’ record to an NFL-best 14-1, keeping them on track for the AFC’s top seed.
Injury Update: Mahomes Downplays Severity
Following the game, Mahomes addressed the status of his injured ankle, emphasizing that it wasn’t as severe as the high ankle sprain he endured during the 2022-23 postseason—a run that culminated in a Super Bowl victory.
“I feel like I was ahead of where I was last time,” Mahomes explained, comparing his recovery this week to the previous injury. “That one, it kind of hurt just to walk in general, whereas now, I can kind of move around walking and stuff like that. Now, it’s just trying to get better for this next game.”
The Chiefs quarterback acknowledged that while his mobility was somewhat limited, he was focused on continuing to improve as the team heads into a critical stretch of the season.
“We’re playing a good football team that’s got a great defense—they’re going to be getting after it,” Mahomes said, referring to their upcoming Christmas Day matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Try to get in a better spot so I can utilize my mobility and still be able to work within the pocket and outside the pocket as well.”

A Key Matchup Ahead
The Chiefs now face a short turnaround before taking on the Steelers on Christmas Day. The Steelers, who lost a hard-fought division game to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, will be eager to bounce back in front of their home crowd.
Known for their aggressive defense, the Steelers will present a tough challenge for Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-powered offense. Pittsburgh’s defensive front, led by stars like T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick, is sure to test Mahomes’ ability to navigate the pocket and extend plays—a hallmark of his game when fully healthy.
Chiefs Focused on the Top Seed
With the Chiefs sitting at 14-1, their sights remain firmly set on securing the AFC’s top seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Mahomes’ ability to manage his recovery and continue delivering at a high level will be crucial as Kansas City navigates the final stretch of the regular season.
For Mahomes, his determination to play through pain and maintain his elite performance underscores why he’s considered one of the NFL’s most valuable players.
With the postseason just weeks away, Chiefs fans can take solace in knowing their star quarterback remains focused on the ultimate goal—a third trip to the Super Bowl.
