Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, has officially reported to the Smith County Jail in Texas to begin serving his sentence for his most recent DWI conviction. According to TMZ, Mahomes Sr. was booked on Tuesday, just before 5 p.m., and is expected to remain in custody until his release on October 31.
Mahomes Sr., 54, was arrested by the Tyler Police Department on February 3, just eight days before his son led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LVIII. The arrest occurred after officers noticed his white Genesis traveling unusually slowly in the 1100 block of W. Gentry Parkway. After pulling him over, officers discovered that his vehicle’s registration had expired in September 2022, and they also found an open can of beer in the car.
Footage obtained by TMZ showed Mahomes Sr. becoming frustrated and emotional during the arrest, expressing concern about the impact his legal trouble could have on his son’s Super Bowl preparations. “Are y’all serious?” he exclaimed. “I’m supposed to be going to the Super Bowl to watch my son play football, and this is what we’re doing?”
As officers processed the scene, Mahomes Sr. grew increasingly agitated. “Can I say one thing?” he pleaded. “My son is getting ready to play in the fing Super Bowl, OK? Just listen to me. I am not drunk. I promise you. I’ve had some drinks. But he can’t have this right now. Listen, this can’t happen.” He continued to express concern that the arrest would become public and disrupt his son’s mindset going into the big game: “This s‘s going to be on the news, which is going to f*** with him, and it’s probably going to f*** him up. And he probably won’t win the Super Bowl. But that’s fine. If that’s what y’all want to do, that’s good.”
Despite his frustration, Mahomes Sr. was cooperative with the police for most of the interaction. After his arrest, he was taken to Smith County Jail and released on a $10,000 bond.

Remarkably, Mahomes Sr. made it to the Super Bowl the following weekend to witness his son secure his third championship ring in a thrilling 25-22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
Following his arrest, Mahomes Sr. received a five-year probation sentence as well as a brief jail term, which he is currently serving. This incident marks a difficult chapter for the Mahomes family, as the elder Mahomes has faced multiple legal issues in recent years.
In June 2024, he was arrested again in Texas for driving with a suspended license, further complicating his legal situation.
In the lead-up to the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes was asked about his father’s arrest but kept his comments brief. “I can’t go into it too much, but I mean he’s doing good for whatever the situation is,” the Chiefs quarterback said. “It’s a family matter, so I’ll just keep it to the family. That’s all I’m going to say at this point.”
Despite these challenges, Mahomes Sr. has made efforts to turn his life around. In August, he celebrated six months of sobriety, sharing a heartfelt Instagram post in which he thanked his family and friends for their support during his recovery. “I would like to Thank my God, wife, family, and friends for 6 months on the sunny side of the road,” Mahomes Sr. wrote, acknowledging the difficulties of his journey. He also shared a special message for his wife, Patrick Mahomes II’s stepmother, Trisha Mahomes: “Trisha Mahomes, thanks for all you do.”
As Mahomes Sr. serves his current sentence, the Mahomes family continues to navigate these personal struggles privately, with Patrick Mahomes focusing on leading the Kansas City Chiefs through the 2024 NFL season.
Despite the off-field distractions, Mahomes remains one of the league’s most celebrated and successful quarterbacks, and his father’s legal issues have not derailed his on-field success.
The situation serves as a reminder of the complex and often difficult dynamics faced by public figures and their families, but Patrick Mahomes has continued to maintain focus on his career and his family’s well-being throughout these challenges.
