Sometimes, a bet isn’t just a bet, except when it appears to be.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes seemingly found himself on the losing end of a wager this week. He shared a snapshot on social media wearing the headpiece of a Texas Longhorns mascot costume.
Mahomes’ Instagram post, featuring him flashing the ‘Hookem’ hand signal, carried the caption, “‘A bets (sic) a bet…’ Okay cool #Hookem.” By tagging former Chiefs teammate Shane Buechele and his wife Paige, both University of Texas at Austin alumni, Mahomes hinted at the possibility of losing a bet. This was further fueled by the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team’s victory over Colorado State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. As a Texas Tech alum, Mahomes likely had a vested interest in seeing Texas lose.

However, Paige Buechele later clarified on her Instagram that Mahomes’ costume choice wasn’t the outcome of a bet. She revealed, “What’s crazyyy is that there wasn’t even a bet. This was all him!!”
Texas indeed triumphed over Colorado State, advancing to face Tennessee in the second round. Meanwhile, Mahomes’ alma mater, Texas Tech, faced defeat against North Carolina State, relegating them to watch the tournament from home as the Longhorns moved forward.
Recently, Shane Buechele transitioned from Kansas City to Buffalo, where he will back up Bills quarterback Josh Allen. However, before his departure, the Buecheles and the Mahomeses attended a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) game together in Kansas City. The Kansas City Current, partly owned by Mahomes and his wife Brittany, secured a thrilling victory against the Portland Thorns in their inaugural game at CPKC Stadium.
Sharing a photo of the two couples, Paige Buechele expressed their support for the K.C. Current, writing on Instagram, “BIG @kccurrent fans.”
