Patrick and Brittany Mahomes recently opened up about one of the scariest experiences of their lives: their 1-year-old son Bronze’s severe allergic reaction to nuts, which landed him in the emergency room last summer. In an emotional Instagram video posted Tuesday for Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his wife recounted the terrifying ordeal and how it impacted their family.
Brittany explained that they had decided to do early allergy testing with Bronze when he was around nine months old, especially after learning that their 3-year-old daughter, Sterling, also suffered from allergies.
Brittany said she was attempting an early introduction to potentially allergenic foods in the hopes of reducing the risk of Bronze developing severe allergies. Unfortunately, it was during this process that they discovered their young son had a serious allergy to nuts.
“With Bronze, I was doing early introduction,” Brittany said in the video. “It started the panic inside of me,” she admitted, recalling the August 2023 incident when Bronze’s allergic reaction began. Brittany described how quickly things escalated: Bronze’s body broke out in welts and hives, and he was visibly uncomfortable. The sight of her son suffering was one of the most frightening moments of her life.
“That’s when we rushed to the emergency room,” Brittany continued. “Just seeing his entire body covered in welts and hives and him being so uncomfortable was probably one of the scariest moments of my life.” She shared how helpless she felt during the episode, emphasizing the emotional toll that the incident took on her as a mother.

Patrick, who was also present during the incident, echoed his wife’s sentiments, describing just how terrifying it was to witness his son in distress. “I remember how scared I was and how serious it felt,” Patrick said. “Luckily for us, the doctors were able to help, and that’s when, to me, it became a serious thing that I needed to really pay attention to.” The experience opened his eyes to the dangers of food allergies, and he realized the importance of being vigilant and proactive about his children’s health.
The Mahomeses have since become advocates for food allergy awareness, partnering earlier this year with AUVI-Q, an epinephrine injection product, to help spread awareness about food allergies and educate other parents on how to recognize and respond to severe allergic reactions.
Their goal is to help other families avoid the fear and uncertainty they faced during Bronze’s allergic reaction.
The couple, who have been together since high school and tied the knot in March 2022, are parents to two young children: their daughter Sterling, born in February 2021, and their son Bronze, born in November 2022.
Patrick and Brittany’s commitment to their family is evident, and they are using their platform to make a difference for others who may be facing similar challenges.
Their story highlights the importance of awareness and education when it comes to food allergies.
As parents, the Mahomeses hope that by sharing their experience, they can encourage others to take allergies seriously and seek the necessary testing and precautions for their children. “We just want to make sure other parents know that they’re not alone in this,” Brittany added. “Food allergies can be really scary, but there are ways to be prepared and to keep your children safe.”
Patrick and Brittany’s journey through this experience has not only brought them closer as a family but has also made them passionate advocates for allergy safety and awareness.
The couple continues to navigate parenthood with grace, sharing their ups and downs with their fans, and always striving to use their influence to help others.
