Sometimes the path to success isn’t a straight line.
Pat McAfee’s post-football journey didn’t unfold as he had envisioned. In a recent interview on the “All The Smoke” podcast, McAfee opened up about the challenges he faced after retiring from the NFL.
McAfee revealed that he encountered resistance from traditional sports media outlets, who seemed reluctant to embrace him. Undeterred, he ventured into digital media with Barstool Sports, describing the experience as a “university of how digital works.”

He shifted his focus away from traditional networks and concentrated on cultivating his own brand.
Eventually, McAfee’s perseverance paid off, as major networks such as ESPN, NBC, Amazon, and Apple began extending offers to him. Today, McAfee finds himself in high demand and has secured a position at ESPN, marking a successful outcome after overcoming initial obstacles.
