As Caitlin Clark‘s illustrious collegiate career at Iowa approaches its conclusion, the landscape of women’s college basketball braces for a shift in prominence.
Clark’s impending departure to the 2024 WNBA draft at the conclusion of the women’s NCAA tournament opens up a void in the sport’s limelight and leadership.
One potential successor to Clark’s throne as the most sought-after superstar in women’s college basketball is UConn’s Paige Bueckers. When asked about the prospect of assuming this role, the 22-year-old offered a thoughtful and altruistic perspective.
Reflecting on her freshman year when she was widely celebrated by the media, Bueckers expressed her belief in the importance of sharing the spotlight to foster the growth of the game. She emphasized the need to showcase all the talented stars of college basketball rather than solely focusing on one player.
Bueckers expressed her sincere hope that in the coming year, she won’t be the sole center of attention. Instead, she aspires for media coverage and recognition to be distributed more evenly among her peers, advocating for a collective celebration of talent within the sport.
“I know freshman year I was like the media darling,” Bueckers said. “… I think it’s more important for the game to share the spotlight, to grow the game and show all the stars of college basketball, not just focus on one particular player.
“I honestly hope next year I’m not the focal point and the only person that gets attention. I hope as media and as players we can spread the love a little bit more.”

Returning to UConn for her final collegiate season in 2024-25, Bueckers acknowledges the opportunity to step into the shoes vacated by Clark as the sport’s leading figure. However, she remains steadfast in her desire for the spotlight to be shared among the many skilled athletes in the game.
In the meantime, Bueckers is poised to face off against Clark in a highly anticipated matchup during the Final Four on Friday. As the Huskies and Hawkeyes vie for a shot at the national championship, the stage is set for a compelling clash between two of the sport’s brightest talents.
