Australian Olympic field hockey player Tom Craig was arrested in Paris after allegedly attempting to purchase cocaine, according to various reports.
Craig, 28, was detained in the city’s 9th arrondissement neighborhood. The Paris Public Prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrest to 9news.com.au, detailing the incident.
“I can confirm that police officers who witnessed a cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement, on the night of August 6 to 7, arrested the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia and who is said to be a member of the Australian field hockey team,” a spokesperson stated.
The arrest involved not only Craig but also the seller, who was found with “75 ecstasy pills, 3 grams of 2 MMC, and seven vials of cocaine,” according to Europe 1 reporter Jean-Baptiste Marty.
As of now, Craig has not been formally charged with any crimes, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirmed in a statement.
“An Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6. No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member,” the statement read.

Craig, a prominent figure in the field hockey world, won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
He was part of the Australian squad that was recently eliminated in the quarterfinals at this year’s games by the Netherlands.
The incident has cast a shadow over Craig’s athletic achievements, and the situation is being closely monitored by both the AOC and international sports authorities. The details of his potential legal consequences remain uncertain as investigations continue.
