Skenes’s girlfriend, Livvy Dunne, posted a heart emoji on her Instagram story in response to the ovation.
It was a classy gesture from Cardinals fans, who got to witness firsthand the talent of this young pitcher. Skenes entered the game with a 3.00 ERA and managed to lower it to 2.43 by the time he threw his last pitch.
After Skenes exited the game, the Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the top of the ninth inning and eventually secured a 2-1 victory. They are now 32-34 overall and tied for the last wild-card spot in the National League.
The Pirates will face the Cardinals again on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. ET.
