49ers owner Jed York remains discontented over a contentious call against his team in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs four years ago.
York expressed this week that he vividly recalls the 44-yard pass from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill in Super Bowl LIV. The play occurred on a crucial third-and-15 situation with the 49ers leading 20-10 and just seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Despite the 49ers appearing on the brink of victory, that pivotal completion set the stage for the first of three late-game touchdowns by the Chiefs, ultimately resulting in a 31-20 Kansas City triumph.
York contends that Nick Bosa was held during the play, and he believes the Mahomes-to-Hill pass should never have transpired.
“I remember Nick Bosa getting held on third-and-long and that not getting called,” said York. “But it’s football. I should say this, I haven’t talked to anybody with Detroit, but I feel for them when you’re in a situation where you’re up, and you think you can win a game and make it memorable, and things go the wrong way. I’ve been on good sides of that and I’ve been on bad sides of that. When you’re up by 10 points against a team in a Super Bowl, thoughts are going through your head like, ‘We’re going to have a parade, somebody’s going to Disneyland, this is going to be awesome,’ and then you don’t.”

The Chiefs’ offensive line has garnered a reputation as one of the most penalized units in the NFL, with three of its linemen ranking in the top 20 for penalties committed. The question arises whether these comments will impact the refereeing performance at Super Bowl 58, suggesting the 49ers may be advocating for closer scrutiny of their star player and the events of Allegiant Stadium on February 11th.
