Following the San Francisco 49ers’ defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, there was no shortage of finger-pointing, with guard Jon Feliciano initially attributing a crucial missed block to Spencer Burford during overtime.
However, Feliciano later backpedaled from his statement, retracting his claim that a hangover influenced his decision to call out Burford.
While head coach Kyle Shanahan faced criticism for various coaching decisions contributing to the Chiefs’ successful defense of their Super Bowl title, the players also made their share of errors during the 25-22 loss.

One such mistake occurred during the 49ers’ final drive when Brock Purdy was forced to throw the ball away on a critical 3rd-and-4 in the red zone in overtime, as no one on the offensive line blocked Chiefs DT Chris Jones, leading to a field goal attempt.
Observers speculated that 49ers tackle Colton McKivitz missed his assignment, but Spencer Burford, who replaced an injured Jon Feliciano at right tackle, admitted he failed to execute his assignment correctly.
Prior to Burford’s admission, Feliciano had defended McKivitz online, implying that the player responsible for blocking Jones had failed to fulfill his duty. Although Feliciano did not directly name Burford, it was evident whom he was referring to.
While Feliciano’s assessment may have been accurate, publicly calling out a teammate’s mistake on social media may not have been the best approach, leaving Burford understandably annoyed.
Nevertheless, Burford received an apology from Feliciano, who seemingly attributed his decision to blame Burford on a hangover following the loss.
In the world of sports, mistakes and tensions among teammates are not uncommon, and it appears this situation will be resolved internally among the players.
