After years of development, David O. Russell’s long-awaited project, Madden, is finally nearing its big moment.
Nicolas Cage has been cast to play the legendary football coach and sports commentator John Madden in a new drama from Amazon MGM Studios. Directed by Russell, known for acclaimed films like Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, this movie promises to be a unique take on Madden’s legacy.
However, this film isn’t your typical biopic or sports drama.
Unlike Russell’s previous work on the boxing film The Fighter, Madden will explore the origins of one of the most iconic video game franchises ever created—Madden NFL. Sources suggest that the movie will delve into the story behind the creation of the game, which has become a cornerstone of the sports gaming world.
The project, produced by Prime Sports Original, is being spearheaded by Todd Black, along with Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, and Jonathan Shukat from Escape Artists, as well as Russell and Matthew Budman. Escape Artists is also working on a live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe for Amazon.
John Madden, who was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s, achieved tremendous success with the team, building an impressive winning record.
He later transitioned to a three-decade career as a color commentator, becoming a beloved figure in American pop culture with his energetic and insightful commentary. Madden earned 16 Sports Emmy Awards during his broadcasting career.

In the 1980s, Madden began collaborating with Electronic Arts, leading to the creation of Madden NFL, which debuted in 1988. The game has since become synonymous with his name, perhaps even more so than his coaching or broadcasting achievements.
Russell penned the script, building on an earlier draft by Cambron Clark. The director expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible, as beloved national legend John Madden. Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity, and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”
Cage’s involvement comes after months of navigating the complexities of scheduling and securing the right talent for the project. At one point, Hugh Jackman was rumored to be in talks for the role, but the part ultimately went to Cage.
Nicolas Cage, a Hollywood icon known for his eclectic career, has successfully balanced major studio films, award-winning dramas (including two Oscars), and cult classics. He can currently be seen as the lead character in Longlegs.
