Life as a rookie in the NFL is notoriously challenging, but it becomes even more complicated when accusations arise about sleeping through team meetings. That’s exactly what happened to Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton, who found himself at the center of controversy after comments made during the Bengals’ preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts.
During the broadcast, veteran commentator Al Michaels and his partner Kirk Herbstreit were discussing Burton’s potential and the expectations placed on him as he transitions into the NFL. Herbstreit noted the importance of discipline and professionalism for the young player, saying, “Just a matter of being really bought into the system and being disciplined and being a pro. That’s the one question I think with him.”
Michaels then chimed in with a remark that caught many by surprise: “Yeah, don’t sleep through meetings, right?”
The implication that Burton had been sleeping through team meetings seemed to come out of nowhere, sparking confusion and concern among fans and analysts alike. The remark quickly became a talking point on social media and sports news outlets.

Burton, who had a standout college career at both Georgia and Alabama, was quick to address the situation. Speaking to Bengals on SI, he firmly denied the accusation. “I don’t even know,” Burton said, clearly puzzled by the claim. “I don’t know where that came from. I was confused myself.”
He further downplayed the issue, adding, “I don’t even care about it because I don’t even know what he’s talking about.” Burton’s response suggests that the accusation may have been baseless, or at the very least, blown out of proportion.
As the Bengals prepare for the upcoming 2024 season, Burton’s focus appears to be where it should be—on the field. With the team potentially needing him to step up, especially considering any developments with star receiver Ja’Marr Chase, Burton seems determined to make a strong impression in his first year in the NFL.
Cincinnati’s season opener is set for Sunday, September 8, against the New England Patriots, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. All eyes will be on Burton to see how he performs, and whether he can rise above the distractions to contribute to the Bengals’ success.
