Sunday’s highly anticipated game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs was filled with tension, especially for Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. His frustrations boiled over during the 26-25 loss, leading to a heated on-field moment that resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The incident occurred in the fourth quarter after Chase was tackled by Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie.
Clearly upset, Chase turned his frustration toward head referee Alex Kemp, prompting Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow to step in and try to calm him down. However, Chase angrily brushed off Burrow’s attempt, pushing the quarterback’s hand away.
CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson initially reported that Chase’s frustration stemmed from the lack of a penalty for what he believed to be a hip-drop tackle by McDuffie. Hip-drop tackles, which are dangerous and can lead to injuries, have been a point of contention in recent seasons. Chase was visibly upset that McDuffie wasn’t flagged for the hit.
Following the game, Kemp confirmed that the root of Chase’s frustration was indeed the lack of a penalty for the tackle. “He was questioning the tackle,” Kemp told reporters. “He thought he was hip-drop tackled on the previous play. So, he came to me wondering about that call.”
However, what escalated the situation was Chase’s choice of words. Kemp revealed that Chase’s complaints crossed a line, leading to the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. “It’s pretty clear cut,” Kemp said, via The Athletic. “It was simply abusive language toward a game official. I’m not going to repeat what he said, but there was no misinterpretation—just abusive language.”

Chase’s penalty proved costly for the Bengals, as it not only hurt their field position but also shifted the momentum late in the game. His emotions seemed to reflect a deeper frustration, as Chase’s season has been marked by both on-field struggles and off-field contract issues.
In the loss to the Chiefs, Chase caught 4-of-5 targets for just 35 yards, a relatively quiet performance following his six-catch, 62-yard outing the previous week. His production has been notably below expectations for a player of his caliber, adding to the tension surrounding his future with the Bengals.
Part of Chase’s frustrations this season may stem from unresolved contract negotiations. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chase halted contract talks for the remainder of the season after failing to reach an agreement during the offseason. Schefter reported that Chase felt misled by the Bengals, who had indicated that a long-term extension would be reached by the start of the season—a promise that went unfulfilled.
“According to sources, the star wide receiver believes the Bengals misled him when they told him at the end of last season, and again during the offseason, that he would get an extension that ultimately did not happen,” Schefter wrote.
To protect himself amid the stalled negotiations, Chase reportedly took out a $50 million insurance policy for the 2024 season, safeguarding against potential injury. This decision came after speculation that Chase might sit out key games, including those against the Patriots and Chiefs, as leverage in contract discussions. However, Chase made it clear that he would continue to play, deal or no deal.
Despite his commitment to the team, the Bengals find themselves in a difficult spot, sitting at 0-2 to start the season. Chase’s frustrations, both on the field and in the negotiation room, are indicative of larger issues for the team as they search for answers early in the year. With contract negotiations on hold and the team struggling, the Bengals will need to rally quickly to avoid a deeper slump.
As for Chase, his outburst against the Chiefs may serve as a reflection of his broader frustrations, but the focus will need to shift back to football as the Bengals look to turn things around.
