Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is widely regarded as one of the most valuable players in the NFL, and according to a recent survey of 31 NFL agents and representatives, his potential value as a free agent is nothing short of astronomical.
In a poll conducted by The Athletic’s Ben Standig, the agents were asked a variety of questions, from identifying the best-run franchise to evaluating which team had the most successful offseason. However, the most eye-catching question focused on Mahomes’ potential market value.
The agents were asked, “What average annual value (AAV) would three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes receive if he were a free agent on the open market?”
The responses were staggering. Out of the 31 agents surveyed, six predicted that Mahomes would command more than $100 million per year in AAV. Five agents estimated he would receive around $75 million annually, while 13 believed he could secure $70 million per year. The remaining seven agents estimated his AAV would be $60 million or below.

To put this in perspective, the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL today—such as Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, Green Bay’s Jordan Love, and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence—each earn an average of $55 million per year, according to Spotrac. This means that even the most conservative estimates for Mahomes’ potential free agency value significantly exceed the current market standard.
While Mahomes already holds the record for the largest contract in NFL history at $450 million—$175 million more than the next highest contract—his current average annual value of $45 million places him only 11th among quarterbacks, tied with Atlanta’s Kirk Cousins.
Several agents in the poll emphasized that Mahomes’ true worth might far exceed even the most generous projections. One agent suggested, “$100 million per year guaranteed over five years. That’s probably low. Mahomes is the ultimate difference-maker. Eighteen teams would pay that now.”
Another agent speculated that Mahomes’ value could be so high that it might require part ownership of a franchise to fully compensate him. “Start at $70 million annually and go from there, even if that means part ownership somehow,” the agent proposed.
Mahomes’ impact on the field is undeniable. Having already led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories, his success has set him apart as a generational talent. In March, Mahomes restructured his contract to create over $21 million in cap space for the Chiefs, further demonstrating his value to the franchise.
As long as Mahomes continues to perform at an elite level, his potential price tag on the open market would only continue to soar. Should he ever become a free agent, the competition for his services would likely break all existing records, with teams willing to offer unprecedented sums to secure his talents.
The sky’s the limit for Mahomes, and if he keeps winning, he could redefine what it means to be the highest-paid player in NFL history.
