After parting ways with Russell Wilson this offseason, head coach Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos are starting fresh.
They selected former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and early indications suggest they are pleased with their choice.
On Thursday, Payton elaborated on why he believes Nix is ahead of expectations in his development.
“He’s farther along than most would be,” Payton said. “We’re talking about a player who’s played 61 games. He’s extremely smart. He’s picked it up very quickly.”
Nix is a veteran in the truest sense, holding the record for the most starts at the FBS level.
His college career spanned two top programs, Auburn and Oregon, providing him with extensive experience against many players he will face in the NFL.
From a football perspective, there’s little that Nix hasn’t encountered. While he may need some time to adjust to the speed and processing demands of the NFL, he is confident in his abilities at this stage of his career.
The Broncos have not yet named a starter for Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, but Payton’s endorsement bodes well for Nix’s chances to earn the job.
Nix positioned himself among the top players in college football last season, and it’s clear the Broncos believe he has the potential to distinguish himself in the NFL as well.
