Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, is celebrated for numerous talents, yet remarkable speed isn’t among them.
During the NFL combine broadcast, Mahomes’ lack of explosive swiftness was evident when he was directly compared to Xavier Worthy, who recently set a new 40-yard dash record.
Worthy’s sensational sprint of 4.21 seconds on Saturday secured him the title of the fastest time in combine history, surpassing John Ross’ previous record of 4.22 set in 2017.
In contrast, Mahomes participated in the 40-yard dash during the 2017 combine, clocking in at 4.80 seconds, trailing behind Ross and most of the field. The NFL added a playful twist by juxtaposing Mahomes’ time with Worthy’s.
The NFL’s official X account extended an apology to Mahomes for showcasing the disparity in speed between him and Worthy.

This preemptive apology likely stemmed from Mahomes’ specific request earlier in the week for the NFL Network to refrain from airing his 40-yard dash video. Despite the two-time NFL MVP’s plea, his wishes went unheeded.
Mahomes was among several NFL stars who reacted to Worthy’s remarkable run. It’s possible that the Chiefs, in need of a wide receiver upgrade, might consider taking a closer look at the 6’1″ speedster ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
