Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is now a very wealthy man.
The Detroit Lions have been active this offseason, and their efforts continued with the reported extension of quarterback Jared Goff.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions are finalizing a four-year, $212 million extension for Goff, marking the richest contract in team history, with $170 million guaranteed.
For comparison’s sake, this is a very similar deal to the one Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed in September of 2023 which has him being paid $210.6 million over four years.
Previously signed through the 2024 season, Goff and the team opted for an extension to avoid any potential contract distractions or free agency concerns as the Lions aim to build upon their recent success.
This move comes as the Lions seek to capitalize on a breakthrough season that saw them advance to the NFC championship game.
Following a challenging first season with the Detroit Lions, during which the team finished 3–13, Jared Goff has emerged as one of the NFL’s premier quarterbacks, coinciding with the Lions’ transformation into a playoff contender.

In his eighth NFL season, Goff demonstrated his prowess by completing 67.3% of his passes for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns, with just 12 interceptions.
His stellar performance guided the Lions to an impressive 12–5 record, culminating in the franchise’s first playoff win in 32 years with a thrilling 24–23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card playoff round.
Building on this success, the Lions continued their postseason journey by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round.
However, their playoff run concluded with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game.
Despite this setback, Goff’s leadership and performance have solidified his status as a cornerstone of the Lions’ resurgence.
Jared Goff’s extension solidifies his place among the Detroit Lions’ key players, alongside receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell, who also signed lucrative long-term contracts this offseason. Sewell’s deal positioned him as the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL, while St. Brown ranks second among receivers in average annual salary.
With an average annual salary of $53 million in his new contract, Goff currently stands as the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL, trailing only Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals in yearly earnings. Goff will earn $32.3 million in the upcoming year, the final season of the four-year, $134 million extension he signed with the Rams in 2019.
Goff arrived with the Lions before the 2021 season as part of a trade that sent quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams. In exchange, the Lions received two first-round picks, which later became receiver Jameson Williams (in 2022) and running back Jahmyr Gibbs (in 2023). Additionally, Detroit utilized a 2021 third-round pick acquired in the deal to select defensive tackle Alim McNeill.
Selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Cal, Goff led the Los Angeles Rams to Super Bowl LIII in his third season, where they fell to the New England Patriots in a 13–3 contest.
