Luis Severino recently found himself in hot water with some fans after making comments that were perceived as insensitive by certain segments of the New York Mets’ fanbase. The incident occurred as the Mets continue their intense battle for one of the three Wild Card spots in the National League. As of Monday, the team was just 1.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the final spot, with the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks slightly ahead of Atlanta in the standings.
Before the Mets’ Monday game against the Baltimore Orioles, Severino spoke with reporters, including Mike Puma of the New York Post. During the conversation, Puma mentioned the recent injury to Braves third baseman Austin Riley and informed Severino that Diamondbacks slugger Ketel Marte was also heading to the injured list.
In response, Severino made a lighthearted comment that some fans found troubling.

Severino jokingly asked Puma if there was any news of a Padres player landing on the injured list as well, saying, “How about San Diego? Nothing on San Diego?” His remark, intended as a tongue-in-cheek comment about the Mets’ rivals, quickly sparked a debate among fans.
The reaction on social media platform X was mixed. Some fans criticized Severino’s comment as being in poor taste, suggesting that it was inappropriate to joke about injuries to opposing players. Others expressed disbelief that Severino would make such a remark in the first place, viewing it as unsportsmanlike.
However, there was also a significant portion of the fanbase that defended Severino, arguing that the media had blown the comment out of proportion by taking it out of context. Mike Puma later clarified that Severino’s words were said in a “very tongue-in-cheek” manner, emphasizing that the pitcher’s intent was not malicious.
Despite the controversy surrounding Severino’s comments, Monday turned out to be a thrilling day for Mets fans. The team secured a dramatic victory over the Orioles, capped off by a walk-off home run from catcher Francisco Alvarez.
The home run not only won the game but also featured one of the most emphatic celebrations of the season, adding a high note to an otherwise contentious day.
