The announcer’s curse strikes again, and the New York Mets can’t seem to escape it.
Heading into the ninth inning with a 4-3 lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, the Mets seemed poised to clinch the game. However, as history has shown, the Mets have their own unique challenges in sealing the deal.
In the decisive ninth inning, Arizona’s pinch-hitter Gabriel Moreno hit a double off Mets pitcher Jake Diekman. Ketel Marte, already having hit a home run earlier, was next at bat with a chance to change the course of the game. It was at this moment that WPIX announcer Gary Cohen made a remark that would soon haunt Mets fans.
“The Mets have lost five games this year that they’ve led after eight innings. That is an enormous number,” Cohen noted. “Trying not to make it six.”
Almost as if on cue, Marte launched a 439-foot home run to centerfield, marking his 12th of the season and flipping the score to 5-4 in favor of Arizona, a lead they maintained to secure the victory.
It seems the Mets have a knack for complicating situations, a lesson that Cohen and other broadcasters might eventually learn.
