Aaron Rodgers may be finishing the 2024 season on a personal high note, but that doesn’t mean the New York Jets are changing their stance on the future Hall of Fame quarterback. Despite some of his best performances this year in the last two weeks, the organization appears poised to move in a different direction in 2025.
Following the midseason firing of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, the belief around the league has been that the Jets would not retain Rodgers beyond the current campaign.
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, this expectation persists among those interested in the Jets’ soon-to-be-available GM position. Jones notes that prospective candidates assume Rodgers will not be mandated to stay by owner Woody Johnson, allowing a new regime the freedom to reshape the team’s quarterback situation entirely.
Rodgers, who turned 41 in December, has shown flashes of his former brilliance lately. In Sunday’s 32–25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the veteran went 16-of-30 passing for 289 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
The week prior, he threw for 339 yards and a touchdown in an overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins. Over the last four games, he’s tallied eight touchdowns to just one interception.
Yet, these improved numbers have not translated to overall team success. The Jets sit at 4–10, seemingly stuck in a cycle of underachievement that has led them to consider a complete overhaul.
Rodgers, who has been working his way back from a torn Achilles suffered at the start of his Jets tenure, simply may not fit into the long-term vision a new GM and head coach have in mind. His recent performances, while encouraging, haven’t altered the narrative that New York needs a fresh start at the quarterback position.
This sentiment appears to be shared by many fans, who are ready for the Jets to build around younger talent and a cohesive, forward-looking plan.
Rodgers’ storied career and brief flashes of excellence in New York haven’t swayed the prevailing opinion that it’s time for a new direction. As the season winds down, all signs point to the Jets parting ways with the former MVP and charting a new course in the quest for sustained success.
