Caleb Williams, the number one pick in last Thursday’s NFL draft, had been diligently preparing for his new role with the Chicago Bears weeks before the selection was officially announced.
Aware that the Bears were set to draft him, Williams took proactive steps to familiarize himself with the team’s offensive strategies.
He worked closely with private quarterback coach Will Hewlett to grasp some foundational aspects of the Bears’ playbook, ensuring he was well-prepared for rookie minicamp and the subsequent training camp.
“We have pieces [of the playbook]. I don’t have the plays,” Hewlett explained, as reported by On3. “I could have the plays, and would that really help because there are so many other layers that go into making a successful football play work? But we have the basic route concepts in terms of depths and timing, and then how that matches together.”

Once Williams arrives at minicamp, he will receive the complete playbook, which will give him the opportunity to deepen his understanding throughout the offseason.
With the Bears bringing on Shane Waldron, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks, as the new offensive coordinator, Williams is poised to lead an offense that includes notable talents like Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, and Rome Odunze.
