Amid Mac Jones’s noticeable regression in his third NFL season, questions arise regarding his standing within the New England Patriots’ locker room.
Recent reports indicate that the Patriots are inclined to part ways with the former 2021 first-round pick during the upcoming offseason. However, beyond his on-field struggles, further insights reveal a concerning dynamic surrounding Jones’s presence within the team.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the atmosphere within the Patriots’ quarterback room had become “toxic,” with repercussions extending beyond the field. Notably, rookie Bailey Zappe found himself relegated to watching game tape in the wide receiver room instead of the quarterback quarters due to the strained environment.
Initially well-received, Jones gradually lost favor within the organization, contributing to the deteriorating dynamics of the quarterback space. Such discord manifested to the extent that Zappe, despite being a newcomer, sought refuge elsewhere to conduct his film study.
“[Mac Jones] was well-liked early on, but, over time, lost support in the building. And the quarterback room he was in the last two years got toxic, to the point where Bailey Zappe, as a rookie, sometimes watched tape in the receiver room.”

Jones’s trajectory is starkly contrasting to his promising rookie campaign, where he guided the Patriots to the playoffs and secured a Pro Bowl selection. Despite throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in his debut season, subsequent years witnessed a decline in his performance.
Struggling to replicate his initial success, Jones endured a disappointing sophomore season in 2022, marked by 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions over 14 games. His fortunes worsened in his third year, culminating in a benching after a string of lackluster outings.
During the 2023 season, Jones faced demotion on four occasions in favor of backup Bailey Zappe, further underscoring his regression.
Since entering the league as the 15th overall pick from Alabama in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones has displayed inconsistency, amassing 8,912 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions across 42 games. Under his tenure as the starter, the Patriots have accumulated an 18-24 record, highlighting the challenges faced amidst his tenure.
